How resale profit is calculated

Net proceeds = item sale price + shipping collected for you − selling fees − shipping you pay − other selling costs.

Profit or loss = net proceeds − acquisition cost. When the purchase cost is unknown, you can still calculate proceeds, but not a meaningful profit.

In percentage mode, the fee is the chosen fee base × your rate ÷ 100, plus the fixed fee. The combined percentage amount rounds once to the nearest cent, with half cents rounded up. Your platform may round separate charges differently; use its actual fee total for a completed sale.

Example: a $250 sale is not $250 of profit

This fictional example uses USD. Its fee is illustrative and does not represent a marketplace’s current rate.

LineAmount
Item sale price$250.00
Shipping collected for you+$10.00
Selling and payment fees−$31.50
Outgoing shipping−$12.00
Other selling costs−$3.00
Net proceeds$213.50
Acquisition cost−$180.00
Profit after acquisition cost$33.50

You receive $213.50 after the entered selling costs. Once the $180 acquisition cost is accounted for, the gain is $33.50. A listing price or market estimate has not produced that gain until a sale occurs and its costs are known.

Use the right fee breakdown

Fee rules can depend on the marketplace, category, account and transaction. eBay’s US fee guidance describes what enters its final-value-fee base, including sales tax and shipping exceptions. StockX’s seller-fee guidance distinguishes marketplace types and seller levels. Check the rules that apply to your sale and use your final statement when available.

Keep these three numbers separate

  • Estimated market value: evidence about what comparable items are offered or sold for.
  • Net proceeds: money left from your sale after its selling costs.
  • Profit or loss: those proceeds compared with what the piece cost you.

For the whole collection, follow the collection P&L guide. To evaluate a price before entering it here, read market value versus resale price.

Common questions

Can I use this for sneakers, watches, bags or other collectibles?

Yes. The arithmetic uses your amounts, without a category-specific fee preset. Match the costs and fee rules to the actual transaction.

What if shipping has already been deducted from my payout?

Start with the item sale price, not the reduced payout. Enter each fee and shipping cost once, then compare the result with the sale statement.

Is a blank purchase cost the same as zero?

No. Blank means unknown and leaves profit uncalculated. Enter zero only if you intentionally want a zero acquisition cost in this personal calculation.

Does changing currency convert my amounts?

No. Convert any mixed-currency records separately before using the calculator. All supported display currencies use two decimal places here.
